In a lecture accessible to the general public, the popular Math on Saturday series continues by addressing the topic “What does ‘significant’ mean here? Statistics, confusion and understanding”.
“The new vaccine is significantly more effective than the previous one.” Statements like this are often reported in the news. But what does “significant” actually mean? Is it the same as “important”? And does “non-significant” necessarily mean “it doesn’t really matter”?
Using concrete examples and simulations, the lecture explores what “statistical significance” really means—and, above all, what it doesn’t mean. It also discusses common misconceptions about significance which even scientists sometimes hold.
There will be an opportunity for discussion with the speaker after the lecture.
